About Toronto Reptiles

A Small Household Built on Passion and Experience

We take in reptiles and small animals people can no longer keep, get them healthy and settled, and find them caring new homes. We’re a small household that genuinely loves these animals — not a store and not a registered charity, just people trying to do right by them. Surrendering a reptile to us is always free. Adopters pay a small rehoming fee that helps cover food, supplies, and vet care while the animals are with us.

Toronto Reptiles is run by Olivia and Chris Birkbeck — lifelong reptile keepers who believe every animal deserves a safe, knowledgeable home. When you surrender to us, there is no judgment — only care. Every animal we take in is assessed, rehabilitated if needed, and placed only when we are confident the match is right. Rehoming here isn’t first-come-first-served; it’s about finding the right fit for the animal and the new owner.

No-judgment surrenders — life changes; we’re here to help without shame

We’re not a pet store, and we’re not a registered rescue or charity — we’re a small Toronto household that loves reptiles. Surrendering a reptile to us is always free. When an animal is adopted, a small rehoming fee (typically $50–$100) goes toward the food, enclosures, substrate, and vet care it needed while it was with us.

I’d always been nervous about getting a tarantula but after talking with Olivia I felt completely at ease. The adoption application process showed me they really care about where their animals end up. Couldn’t recommend them more highly.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Reach out and we’ll get back to you within a few hours.

Is adoption first-come-first-served?

No. Every adoption application is personally reviewed by Olivia or Chris. We look for the right fit for the animal — considering your experience level, enclosure setup, and lifestyle — not just who applied first. We want every placement to be a lasting one.

What animals do you currently have available for adoption?

We currently have ball pythons, a hognose snake, and a tarantula looking for homes. New animals are added as we take in surrenders. Visit our adoption page for the most up-to-date listings with full care notes.

I need to surrender my reptile — will you judge me?

Absolutely not. Life circumstances change, and the most responsible thing you can do is find your animal a safe place to go. We have zero judgment for surrenders. Reach out via our surrender page and we’ll discuss the best way to help.

What areas of the GTA do you serve?

We serve the Greater Toronto Area — including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, Ajax, Pickering, and surrounding areas. Get in touch and we’ll work out the logistics for surrenders or adoption handovers.

What happens to my animal after I surrender them?

Every surrendered animal is assessed, given appropriate care, and rehabilitated if needed before we consider rehoming. They stay with us until we are confident the right adopter has come along. We do not rush placements.

Do I need experience to adopt?

Not necessarily — it depends on the animal. Some of the animals in our care are well-suited to first-time keepers with good preparation; others need an experienced home. We’ll discuss your background honestly and match you with an animal that fits your level. We also provide care guidance at handover.

What is a rehoming fee, and why do you charge one?

Surrendering a reptile to us is always free — there’s never a cost to give one up. The rehoming fee (typically $50–$100) is paid only by adopters when they take an animal home, and it helps cover the food, enclosures, substrate, and vet care that animal needed while in our care. We’re not a registered charity or non-profit — we’re a small Toronto household, and the fee simply helps us continue doing this sustainably.
