That setup looks fine. The problem is that loose sand causes impaction — one of the leading preventable causes of death in captive leopard geckos — and an undersized enclosure collapses the temperature gradient in ways that compound over years. Your gecko might survive on the pet-store recommendation, but they won’t thrive.

Choosing the Right Tank Size

Leopard geckos are ground-dwelling lizards. They don’t climb or bask vertically the way many other species do, which means floor space is the single most important dimension in their enclosure. A tall tank wastes real estate. A wide, low tank uses it well.

Minimum and Recommended Dimensions

The commonly cited minimum for an adult leopard gecko is a 20-gallon long tank (30″×12″×12″). In practice, this is too small. It limits the keeper’s ability to create an adequate temperature gradient — the distance between the warm end and the cool end collapses, and the gecko can’t properly thermoregulate. A 20-gallon might sustain a juvenile for the first year, but plan to upgrade.

The current welfare consensus among experienced keepers and reptile vets is a 40-gallon breeder (36″×18″×18″) as the adult minimum. This gives you a genuine temperature gradient, room for at least three hides plus enrichment objects, and enough space for the gecko to move naturally. Many keepers go larger — 4×2-foot PVC enclosures have become popular — and more space is almost never a problem as long as heating is managed correctly.

Glass vs. PVC Enclosures

Glass tanks are widely available, easy to clean, and visually clear. Their main weakness is heat retention — glass loses heat at the sides and back, which can make it harder to maintain the cool side at the right temperature in winter without raising the whole room. They work well, especially with an under-tank heat mat underneath rather than a basking lamp from above.

PVC and wood enclosures with glass fronts (like those from Zen Habitats or Kages) retain heat far better and are increasingly popular for keeper builds. Substrate: What Actually Belongs on the Floor

The substrate conversation is where more bad information exists than anywhere else in leopard gecko keeping. Loose calcium sand is still sold in pet stores specifically marketed for leopard geckos. It is not safe. Leopard geckos ingest substrate while eating — they lick, miss strikes, and occasionally eat mouthfuls of substrate directly. Calcium sand compacts in the gut. Impaction is slow, painful, and frequently fatal.

Safe Substrate Choices

Ceramic tile is the easiest option for beginners. It’s easy to clean, holds heat well from the under-tank heater, can’t be ingested, and costs almost nothing. The downside is that it doesn’t allow digging behaviour, which leopard geckos engage in naturally.

The 70/30 mix (70% chemical-free topsoil, 30% play sand) is the best substrate for naturalistic setups. It allows digging, holds burrow shapes, looks great, and closely approximates the compacted earth-and-sand environments leopard geckos come from in Pakistan and India. When slightly damp in the moist-hide area, it holds localised humidity without making the whole enclosure wet. This is what we use at Toronto Reptiles for our leopard gecko enclosures.

Reptile carpet or paper towel works fine in a quarantine or hospital setup, or for juveniles where substrate monitoring is important. For a permanent display enclosure they’re functional but not enriching.

What to Avoid

Beyond loose sand, avoid coconut fibre alone (retains too much humidity for a desert species and doesn’t hold burrow shape), wood chips (sharp edges, wrong humidity profile), and clay-based cat litters. Anything that compacts in the gut or creates respiratory irritants is off the list.


Heating: Getting the Temperature Gradient Right

Leopard geckos are ectotherms. They regulate their body temperature by moving between warm and cool areas of their enclosure. If the gradient doesn’t exist, the gecko can’t thermoregulate — and that affects digestion, immune function, and activity level. Getting the gradient right is the single most important thing you’ll do when setting up the tank.

Under-Tank Heaters and Thermostats

The primary heat source for a leopard gecko tank is an under-tank heat mat (UTH) placed under one end of the enclosure. This creates a warm belly surface — leopard geckos absorb heat through their ventral surface, not by basking under a lamp.

A thermostat is non-negotiable. Without a thermostat, an under-tank heater can reach 50°C or more on the glass surface — enough to cause contact burns. A simple mat thermostat with a probe that sits on the substrate surface above the heater costs $30–60 and is the most important piece of equipment you’ll buy. Set the probe surface temperature to 88–90°F (31–32°C).

Verify these temperatures with a digital thermometer that has a probe. Infrared temperature guns are also useful for checking surface temperatures at multiple points. Stick-on dial thermometers are inaccurate and should not be used as your primary measurement tool.

Do Leopard Geckos Need a Basking Lamp?

Strictly speaking, no. Leopard geckos are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), and in the wild they spend daylight hours in burrows. A basking lamp is not their natural heat source.

That said, a low-wattage incandescent or halogen bulb on a timer (6–8 hours per day) does provide a day/night light cycle that helps regulate circadian rhythms. It shouldn’t be the primary heat source — the under-tank heater holds that role — but it can supplement ambient air temperature in a cool room, especially in Canadian winters. Keep it on a timer and ensure it turns off at night.


Hides: The Three-Hide Rule

Leopard geckos are prey animals. They need to feel concealed to feel safe, and a gecko without adequate hides will spend most of its time stressed. Three hides is the minimum for a single adult leopard gecko.

The Warm Hide

Placed directly over or adjacent to the under-tank heater. This is where the gecko retreats to thermoregulate after eating, during digestion, and when they need to warm up. It should be snug — leopard geckos like to feel the hide walls against their body. A hide that’s too large doesn’t provide the security response they need.

The Cool Hide

On the opposite end of the enclosure. Same principle — snug and dark. This is where the gecko goes when they’re too warm or want to sleep undisturbed during daylight hours. Commercially available half-log hides, cork bark hollows, and 3D-printed caves all work well.

The Moist Hide

This is the most important and most commonly overlooked hide. Leopard geckos shed their skin whole, and in dry environments the shed can get stuck — particularly around the toes, where retained shed can cut off circulation and cause digit loss. A moist hide solves this by providing a humid microclimate within an otherwise dry enclosure.

Fill a hide with damp sphagnum moss or moist coco fibre. A practical method: take a plastic container with a lid, cut an entrance hole in the side, fill the bottom 1–2 cm with damp moss, and replace the moss every 1–2 weeks or when it dries out. Watch for mould, which develops quickly if the moss gets saturated.


Lighting: Do Leopard Geckos Need UVB?

This is one of those areas where the community answer has shifted significantly in the last five years. The old consensus was “no, leopard geckos are nocturnal and don’t need UVB.” The current evidence-based position is more nuanced.

Leopard geckos in the wild are crepuscular, not strictly nocturnal — they’re active around dawn and dusk. During those hours, ambient UVB levels are measurable even in semi-arid Pakistan. There’s now solid evidence (from reptile vet Dr. Frances Baines and others) that exposure to low-level UVB improves Vitamin D3 synthesis in leopard geckos, supporting bone density and immune function — especially in animals fed insects that can’t be perfectly gut-loaded every single feeding.

The practical guidance: a low-intensity UVB strip — a 5.0 or 6% T5 HO tube, like the Arcadia 6% or Zoo Med Reptisun 5.0 — placed 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) from the gecko’s resting area, run for 6–8 hours per day, will provide measurable UVB without overcooking a crepuscular species. You can keep leopard geckos successfully without UVB. You’ll have a healthier gecko with it.


Décor and Enrichment

A bare tank with three hides keeps a leopard gecko alive. A decorated tank keeps them engaged, encourages natural behaviour, and is significantly more interesting to observe. Leopard geckos are more active than their reputation suggests — they investigate new objects, patrol their territory, and occasionally climb low structures.

Useful additions include: flat stones near the warm side (they hold belly heat), cork bark flats and tubes, artificial succulents and cacti (avoid anything with loose fibres that can be ingested), and low-profile driftwood pieces that provide cover without dominating the floor space. Leave clear sightlines between the warm and cool ends so the gecko can navigate comfortably between them.

Avoid sharp edges, anything that can trap a gecko between tight spaces, and objects that tip easily. Leopard geckos will investigate everything in their enclosure over time.

Step-by-Step Assembly Guide

  1. Position the UTH. Place it under one end of the tank (not centred — you need one side warm and one cool). Plug it into the thermostat. Place the thermostat probe on the substrate above the heater.
  2. Add substrate. Lay 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) of your chosen substrate across the whole floor. For tile, cut to fit and lay flat directly on the tank bottom.
  3. Set the warm hide. Position it over the heat mat. The hide floor should sit directly on the substrate above the UTH so belly heat conducts up through it.
  4. Set the cool hide. Place it at the opposite end of the enclosure.
  5. Assemble the moist hide. Fill your container with slightly damp sphagnum moss. Place it in the warm-to-middle zone of the enclosure.
  6. Add décor. Flat stones near the warm end, cork bark and low enrichment objects throughout. Leave clear pathways between hides.
  7. Place the water dish. On the cool side, shallow enough that the gecko can drink without climbing in and getting stuck.
  8. Run the enclosure for 48 hours before adding the gecko. Verify temperatures with a probe thermometer and adjust the thermostat dial until you hit target ranges. Don’t rush this step — it’s much harder to chase temperatures with the gecko already inside.

Can I keep two leopard geckos together?

Female–female cohabitation is sometimes done, but it’s not risk-free — even females can compete over resources, and one gecko consistently monopolising the warm hide will eventually cause health problems for the other. Male–male and male–female pairings outside of intentional breeding are a hard no. If you want multiple leopard geckos, the simplest and safest approach is separate enclosures.

How often should I clean the tank?

Spot-clean waste daily or every other day — leopard geckos tend to designate one corner as their toilet, which makes this easy. Replace the moist hide moss every 1–2 weeks. Full substrate replacement every 4–6 months for a topsoil-sand mix. Full enclosure sanitization with a reptile-safe disinfectant two to three times a year.

Why is my leopard gecko not using the moist hide?

Usually the moss is too wet (soaking rather than damp), too dry, or the entrance hole is too large. Try repositioning the moist hide so the entrance faces the warm hide — geckos often discover objects in their regular travel path before noticing something in an unfamiliar corner. If shed problems appear (stuck shed on toes, retained eye caps), your humidity is low and your gecko needs better access to the moist hide.

Do I need a fogger or mister for a leopard gecko?

No. Leopard geckos come from semi-arid to arid environments. Ambient enclosure humidity should stay around 30–40%. Fogging or misting the whole tank raises humidity too high and can cause respiratory issues. The moist hide provides all the localised humidity your gecko needs for shedding.

What temperature should the enclosure be at night?

The under-tank heater stays on 24/7 via the thermostat, maintaining the warm-side surface temperature consistently. Ambient air temperature can drop to 68–70°F (20–21°C) at night without issue — leopard geckos tolerate normal room temperature drops. My gecko keeps glass surfing — what does that mean?

Glass surfing (rubbing against the glass, appearing to try to escape) usually signals one of three things: the enclosure is too small, temperatures are off (too hot, too cold, or no gradient), or the gecko is a male that has detected a female nearby. It can also happen in newly set-up tanks while the gecko is still adjusting. If temperatures and sizing are correct, give the gecko two weeks to settle before worrying.
